Smoke Eases as Crews Contain Blaze at Canterbury’s Derelict Odeon

Authorities are keeping safety advice and road closures in place despite reports of minimal smoke.

Overview

  • Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called just after 2pm on Saturday to a major fire at the derelict former Odeon cinema on St George’s Place in Canterbury.
  • KFRS later reported minimal smoke, with firefighters still on scene after earlier saying crews were making good progress on the blaze.
  • At the height of operations, more than 60 firefighters with 15 engines and two height vehicles used breathing apparatus, hose-reel jets and large fans, supported by the Volunteer Response Team.
  • Residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution, and nearby businesses and student accommodation were evacuated as the council set up a welfare tent.
  • Parts of St George’s Place and Dover Street remain closed with delays near Lower Chantry Lane, police have cordoned the area and the cause of the fire is not yet known.
