Small Quakes Strike Southern Mexico With No National Alert

Officials reported no damage as the events fell below the trigger levels for Mexico's warning system.

Overview

  • The National Seismological Service recorded a magnitude 4.3 southeast of Villaflores, Chiapas, at 2:02 a.m. Wednesday.
  • Thirty-four minutes later, a magnitude 4.1 hit northwest of Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca, at 2:36 a.m. at 2.1 km depth.
  • A second 4.1 near Juchitán was logged at 6:12 a.m. with a depth near 5 km.
  • Mexico's SASMEX alert did not sound because activation depends on both distance and size, such as magnitude 6 for epicenters beyond 350 km or above 5 within 250 km.
  • Southern Mexico sits at the junction of five tectonic plates, which makes small earthquakes frequent in states like Chiapas and Oaxaca.
