Small Quakes Reported Across Peru and Mexico as Networks Track Routine Activity

With magnitudes below alert thresholds, agencies emphasize readiness rather than emergency response.

Overview

  • Peru’s IGP reported a magnitude 3.7 quake at about 7:00 local time on March 17 located 18 km southwest of Chilca, Cañete (Lima) at 48 km depth, which was felt in parts of the capital.
  • A day earlier, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck near Chala, Caravelí (Arequipa) at 06:36 local time and 78 km depth, with officials reporting no damage.
  • Mexico’s SSN logged multiple low‑magnitude events March 15–16, including a magnitude 3.5 near Matías Romero, Oaxaca, and around magnitude 4.0 near Vicente Guerrero, Baja California.
  • Mexico City’s seismic alert is not designed for these smaller tremors and generally activates only for larger events near magnitude 6 depending on distance to the capital.
  • USGS, IGP and SSN continue real‑time reporting that media relay in live updates, and authorities reiterate preparedness steps such as emergency kits, evacuation plans and drills.
