Small Quakes Recorded in Peru, Mexico and the U.S. as Agencies Track Routine Seismic Activity

Officials report no damage from the small events.

Overview

  • Mexico’s seismic service logged a magnitude 4.0 quake southwest of San Marcos, Guerrero, at 01:02 Sunday, and authorities reported no damage and no SASMEX alert.
  • Earlier in Mexico, the SSN reported two Saturday tremors of magnitude 3.9 near Tonalá, Chiapas, at 03:57 and near Escuinapa, Sinaloa, at 02:07, both described as light.
  • Peru’s IGP confirmed a magnitude 3.6 event on Saturday at 10:16:57 local time located 11 km northeast of Camaná in Arequipa, with shallow shaking reported at intensity II–III.
  • In the United States, the USGS listed routine Sunday activity across California, Alaska and Hawaii, updating maps in real time with magnitude, depth and epicenter coordinates.
  • Mexico’s alert system, SASMEX, only sounds when early estimates point to strong shaking or a magnitude near 6, so these smaller quakes did not trigger public warnings, and agencies in Peru and Mexico urged residents to stay informed and keep emergency kits and plans ready.
