Small Plane Overturns in Curlew Pond, Pilot Killed

Federal and local investigators have opened probes after responders and nearby residents recovered the lone pilot from the submerged two-seat aircraft.

Overview

  • A two-seat fixed-wing plane crashed into Curlew Pond near Plymouth Municipal Airport just after 7:30 a.m. Thursday, according to multiple local reports.
  • Police, firefighters, the Plymouth County Dive Team and nearby residents reached the overturned aircraft, removed the single occupant from the water, and transported him to a hospital.
  • The pilot was later identified as 81-year-old Richard Carrara of Kingston and was pronounced dead at the hospital, Plymouth County officials said.
  • Witnesses described the plane as sputtering before it went down, and preliminary accounts say the flight left Plymouth Municipal Airport about 6:32 a.m. for Martha’s Vineyard and may have been trying to return when the crash occurred.
  • The FAA and NTSB have been notified and are investigating while local authorities continue to gather wreckage, maintenance and witness information; officials say formal cause findings could take days to months.
