Small Jet Overshoots Runway at Porterville Airport; All Six Aboard Safe

Federal investigators have opened probes into the landing overshoot that halted a surgical team’s trip to Porterville

Four doctors flying from the Bay Area to Central California to perform a surgery were aboard a jet that ran off the runway in Porterville on Tuesday. All four doctors and two pilots got out safely.

  • The Cessna 560XL ran off the runway and came to rest in a field near Porterville Municipal Airport during a landing attempt, and deputies reported smoke at the scene.
  • Two pilots and four Bay Area doctors were aboard and all six exited the aircraft without reported injuries while nearby roads were temporarily closed for the emergency response.
  • Flight-tracking data show the jet had flown from San Jose to Oakland earlier and left Oakland at about 11:06 a.m., reaching Porterville roughly 36 minutes later on Tuesday.
  • The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board said they will investigate the incident and have not yet determined a cause.
  • The crash disrupted a scheduled surgical trip to Porterville with no patients on board and the NTSB will lead the on-site factual probe while the FAA conducts a regulatory review.
