SMA Solar to Cut 350 Jobs, Targeting Over €100 Million in Extra Annual Savings

The inverter maker moves to reduce costs after reporting a loss in 2024.

Overview

  • SMA said about 300 of the reductions will be at its Niestetal headquarters, with around 50 roles cut at international sites by the end of 2026.
  • Talks with the works council have begun, with formal negotiations expected to conclude in November and implementation slated to start in January 2026.
  • Management attributed the expanded restructuring to weak residential and commercial demand and intense price competition from Chinese manufacturers.
  • The plan includes optimizing R&D, narrowing the product portfolio, shifting more production to Poland, expanding software work via its India competence center, and trimming corporate overhead.
  • The measures extend a 2024 program that cut about 1,100 jobs and sought up to €200 million in savings; SMA currently employs roughly 3,800 people, including about 2,800 in Niestetal.
