Skull Fragment Found in Kfar Aza Sent for Tests to Confirm Link to Missing Givati Officer

Forensic work at the Abu Kabir institute will decide whether the newly recovered fragment answers the long-running question about Nirel Zini’s missing remains.

Overview

  • Human remains including part of a skull were discovered in the Dor Tzair neighborhood of Kfar Aza and were transferred to the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute for identification.
  • Authorities are testing the fragment to determine whether it is connected to Givati officer Nirel Zini, whose head was never recovered after he was killed on October 7, 2023.
  • The family says investigators from the national Lahav 433 unit previously told them Zini had been beheaded and that officials denied requests to classify him as a fallen soldier taken to Gaza.
  • In the absence of a sustained official search the Zini family, with volunteers and specialists, conducted repeated excavations over nearly three years and sent hundreds of finds to Abu Kabir for analysis.
  • A positive identification could give the family closure and may renew pressure on authorities to explain past handling of remains and improve procedures for other unresolved October 7 cases.
