SJSU Graduate Student Charged in Federal Case Over Hateful Bathroom Bomb Note

Prosecutors say the charge follows a yearslong campaign of hateful threats that shuttered classes and prompted expanded security on campus.

Overview

  • Ziheng “Tony” Fang, 30, was arrested and made his initial federal court appearance on July 10 and is being held in federal custody on one count of making false information and hoaxes.
  • Federal filings say the charged item is a Nov. 5, 2025 paper left in a men’s restroom that included bomb threats, swastikas and explicit racial and religious slurs and that investigators found Fang’s fingerprint on the paper.
  • The criminal complaint alleges investigators linked Fang to more than 20 similar hateful messages on campus dating to October 2024 using key‑card access logs and surveillance footage showing him near some restrooms before notes were found.
  • The threats prompted repeated campus alerts, some professors to cancel or move classes online, extra patrols and new cameras, and university officials say Jewish and Muslim students reported real fear and disruption.
  • Fang faces federal penalties of up to five years in prison and fines up to $250,000 if convicted, state vandalism and threat charges from May remain on the record, and detention and counsel hearings are pending as the investigation continues.
