Overview
- The Justice Department announced Monday that Ziheng “Tony” Fang was arrested and charged federally with providing false information and hoaxes in connection with threatening messages at San Jose State University.
- Federal court papers allege a note found on Nov. 5, 2025 began “!WARNING! MASS BOMB NEXT WEEK” and included swastikas and slurs, and investigators say Fang’s fingerprint was found on that paper.
- The criminal complaint says investigators matched surveillance video showing Fang entering or leaving restrooms and found he used key-card access to buildings in 16 of 18 incidents where such logs exist.
- University records and the complaint say SJSU police logged more than 20 hateful or threatening restroom messages since October 2024, prompting campus safety alerts, extra patrols and some professors to cancel or move classes online.
- The case grew from local charges in May to a federal prosecution led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office with assistance from the DOJ Civil Rights Division and the FBI, and Fang remains in federal custody with court proceedings pending.
