Sixth Death Confirmed After Mapleton Township Crash as Five Doerksen Children Are Laid to Rest

OPP investigators are asking witnesses and dashcam owners to come forward to determine how the crash occurred to inform rural road safety.

Overview

  • A two-vehicle collision at Fourth Line and Wellington Road 12 on June 12 killed five Doerksen children and seriously injured other occupants of a passenger van.
  • Police confirmed late Friday that the 42-year-old lone occupant of the SUV died in hospital, raising the total number of deaths to six.
  • Wellington County OPP says there were 10 people in the van and one in the SUV and that several adults and an infant from the van suffered serious injuries while the children’s mother remains hospitalized.
  • The family held visitation Friday and a funeral for the five children was scheduled for Saturday, and a sister’s online fundraiser has raised more than $300,000 to help cover medical and funeral costs.
  • OPP has an active investigation, has offered support to witnesses and helpers, and urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Wellington County OPP or Crime Stoppers as the force continues a rural intersections safety campaign.
