Six-Hour Rescue Frees Dog Trapped 21 Feet Underground on North York Moors

The operation showcased confined-space cave skills from volunteers alongside statutory responders.

Overview

  • Maisy, a 12-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier who fell about 6.5 metres Friday on moorland near Scarborough, was freed after a six-hour effort and reunited with her owner.
  • Volunteers tracked her whimpers, used hammers and chisels to widen a narrow opening, and sent smaller team members into the tight, winding passages.
  • Cave rescuer Lucy from the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association squeezed through extremely tight sections to reach the dog deep underground.
  • Three rescuers formed a human chain inside the sinkhole to pass Maisy carefully up to the surface.
  • The rescue was a joint effort by Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, North Yorkshire Police, and UWFRA, with SRMRT’s Tony Heap calling the outcome heartwarming.
