Overview
- Maisy, a 12-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier who fell about 6.5 metres Friday on moorland near Scarborough, was freed after a six-hour effort and reunited with her owner.
- Volunteers tracked her whimpers, used hammers and chisels to widen a narrow opening, and sent smaller team members into the tight, winding passages.
- Cave rescuer Lucy from the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association squeezed through extremely tight sections to reach the dog deep underground.
- Three rescuers formed a human chain inside the sinkhole to pass Maisy carefully up to the surface.
- The rescue was a joint effort by Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, North Yorkshire Police, and UWFRA, with SRMRT’s Tony Heap calling the outcome heartwarming.
