Six Found Dead in Northern Michigan Multi‑Scene Shootings

State police located the suspected shooter dead and are conducting forensic work at three scenes to determine a motive.

Overview

  • Troopers who responded to a reported shooting on Friday found three people dead at a Lake Township home and a 13-year-old girl critically wounded who was taken to a hospital and later reported stable.
  • A multi-agency manhunt led officers to a second Missaukee County home where a fourth victim was found and then to a wooded area near Whitlock Lake where the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect, Chad Hickman, 39, and a fifth victim were discovered dead.
  • Michigan State Police say all five victims died of gunshot wounds and have released victims’ ages as a 16-year-old boy, a 45-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman, a 53-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman.
  • Investigators are processing three separate scenes, have not disclosed a motive, are withholding victims’ names pending family notification, and say there is no continuing threat to the public.
  • MSP units were assisted by local sheriff’s deputies, aviation, canine and emergency support teams, the DNR and U.S. Forest Service, and officials warned that ongoing forensic work and scene security will affect the local community as families grieve.
