Overview
- Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman laid the foundation stone on November 9 at Bholaguri in Gohpur for Swahid Kanaklata Barua State University, named in honor of the freedom fighter.
- The project is planned on about 241 acres with a built‑up area of roughly 700,000 square feet, including academic blocks for 2,000 students and hostels for 1,620.
- The university is positioned to offer programs in artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity, blockchain, drone and navigation technology, quantum computing, brain‑computer interfaces, the internet of things, and smart city development.
- Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state is aiming to build infrastructure to accommodate and educate around 10,000 students on the campus.
- Sitharaman framed the launch within a broader push that she said invested Rs 21,000 crore in Northeast education since 2014, citing 850 new schools, the first AIIMS in the region, over 200 skill institutes, new Greenfield airports, and expanded rail links.
