SIT and SGPC Clash Over Scope of Probe into 328 Missing Guru Granth Sahib Copies

The dispute could test whether police can compel the gurdwara body's internal financial and broadcast records in a criminal investigation.

Overview

  • The Amritsar police registered an FIR on December 7, 2025, over the disappearance of 328 sacred copies, or saroops, of the Guru Granth Sahib and named multiple accused under criminal and religious-protection laws.
  • A Bureau of Investigation‑constituted Special Investigation Team made repeated requests for SGPC bank accounts, ledgers and past Gurbani‑telecast agreements with private channels, which the SGPC says fall outside the probe.
  • The SGPC’s president, Harjinder Singh Dhami, has told the Akal Takht that the committee has cooperated and provided copies of records while refusing to hand over what it calls internal administrative material.
  • Punjab Police filed a status report in the Punjab and Haryana High Court saying the SIT sent more than 14 letters and that the SGPC has not furnished full records, and the court has listed the matter next on August 19.
  • The dispute raises broader questions about institutional autonomy, transparency in criminal probes and the handling of religiously sensitive evidence that could affect trust in both the SGPC and state investigators.
