Sir Gino Put Down After Severe Infection During Injury Recovery

A recurring deep infection outpaced treatment during his comeback from a fractured pelvis.

Overview

  • Nicky Henderson, who disclosed the news Tuesday, said the six-year-old was euthanised at a veterinary hospital after intensive care could not halt the spreading infection.
  • Sir Gino fractured his pelvis in the Unibet Hurdle on Cheltenham Trials Day in January, and vets reported the bone was healing even as the infection worsened.
  • The gelding was unbeaten in seven completed starts with three Grade 1 hurdle wins and a standout Grade 2 chase debut, and he had been the early favourite for the Champion Hurdle before his injury.
  • He had beaten a similar illness last year and returned to win the Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day 2025, which underscored his resilience before this relapse.
  • Henderson called him kind and brilliant, jockey Nico de Boinville said he was out of the ordinary, and owners Joe and Marie Donnelly were left with what Henderson described as an awful hole at Seven Barrows.
