Singapore to Acquire Three G550 Maritime Surveillance Aircraft for Early-Warning Role

The jets bolster a layered surveillance network that protects critical sea lanes.

Overview

  • Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing announced on Feb. 27 that the RSAF will buy three Gulfstream G550s to improve early warning of maritime threats.
  • MINDEF said the aircraft will be fitted with maritime radar, electro‑optical and infrared sensors, and communications and identification systems to detect and track potential threats.
  • The G550s will complement Singapore’s Boeing P‑8A fleet as the country transitions from nine Fokker 50 maritime patrol aircraft, according to the minister’s remarks.
  • Singapore will continue pairing manned platforms with unmanned systems, with the Republic of Singapore Navy’s second Multi‑Role Combat Vessel on track for launch in the third quarter of 2026.
  • Ministry artwork shows conformal housings and enlarged nose and tail cones suggestive of an IAI Oron‑like configuration, though any advanced sensor suites remain unconfirmed.
