Singapore Launches Tripartite Jobs Council to Steer AI Workforce Transition

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong pledges to protect every worker during the AI transition.

Overview

  • The Tripartite Jobs Council, announced Thursday by the Manpower Ministry, NTUC and the employers federation, will coordinate training, job redesign and company support for AI adoption.
  • At Friday’s May Day Rally, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong told union leaders that jobs will change yet new and better roles will emerge, and he said the state will scale Company Training Committees to guide the shift.
  • NTUC will expand its Company Training Committees and, through its UTAP benefits, fund up to 50% of subscriptions for more than 20 premium AI tools from May 1, 2026 to Apr 30, 2028 after members complete an approved AI course.
  • Citing a first‑quarter Manpower Ministry survey, officials said about 70% of 2,560 firms have not adopted AI, 6.2% reported lower headcount, and 18.9% are redesigning roles, pointing to task changes rather than broad layoffs.
  • Tripartite partners set a goal to train 100,000 ‘AI bilingual’ workers by 2029 and plan sector AI fluency courses for fields like accountancy and law, with an online self‑check of AI skills due later in 2026.
