Singapore Exports Rebound 6.9% in September on Electronics Surge

The upside surprise versus forecasts of a decline reflects an electronics upswing despite weak demand from the European Union.

Overview

  • Enterprise Singapore reported a 6.9% year-on-year rise in non-oil domestic exports for September, reversing a revised 11.5% drop in August.
  • Electronics shipments jumped 30.4% year on year, led by personal computers, disk media products and integrated circuits.
  • Non-electronics exports edged up 0.4%, supported by an 82.7% increase in non-monetary gold and 14.1% growth in specialised machinery.
  • Exports to Hong Kong rose 56.3%, Taiwan increased 31.9% and China grew 10.1%, while shipments to the European Union fell 20.5%.
  • Shipments to the United States declined 9.9% and exports to Indonesia also fell, contrasting with a Bloomberg-polled consensus that had expected a 2.1% overall contraction.
