Sindh Unveils Roadmap as Thar Coal-to-Fertiliser Project Enters Design Phase

  • Fauji Fertiliser Company is leading the $1.12 billion initiative to convert indigenous Thar coal into urea to strengthen Pakistan’s fertiliser security and cut imports.
  • The project completed its bankable feasibility in November 2025 and has moved into Front-End Engineering Design and project agreements.
  • Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah pledged key facilitation including 12 cusecs of water from Makhi Farash, land for the plant, and a residential colony in Islamkot.
  • FFC projects annual output of about 717,000 tonnes of urea, with roughly half for export that could generate up to $260 million a year.
  • The timeline targets financial close in late 2026–2027 and commercial operations in January 2031, with more than 3,500 direct and about 7,000 indirect jobs projected.
