Silverdale Hit by Second ~2.2 Magnitude Tremor in Weeks

BGS says the shallow 3 km quake is part of a series of small, local tremors that residents across Morecambe Bay reported as a loud bang.

Overview

  • The British Geological Survey confirmed a 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Silverdale at 9:35pm on Saturday, June 6, with a preliminary depth of 3 km.
  • This is the second roughly 2‑magnitude event in under a month after a 2.3 quake on May 13 and follows smaller tremors recorded earlier in 2026 and late 2025.
  • Residents in towns around Morecambe Bay, including Grange‑over‑Sands, Bolton‑le‑Sands, Arnside and Carnforth, reported a loud bang, rumble or brief shaking.
  • No injuries or significant damage have been reported so far and the BGS encourages people who felt the shake to submit reports to help map its reach.
  • Minor UK quakes are common and are often noticeable when they occur close to the surface; local geology and old fault lines are thought to explain repeated shallow tremors in this area.
