Sideshow Killing at Ford City and Uptown Officer-Involved Shooting Leave One Dead and One Suspect Critical

Ford City’s scheduled June 22 shutdown raises concern that the vacant mall will attract more unsanctioned car gatherings.

Overview

  • Video and police say 21-year-old Martin Isaac Cantu Murillo was shot in the head and later died after gunfire erupted during a large unsanctioned car “sideshow” in the Ford City Mall parking lot early Saturday.
  • An officer at the Ford City scene counted about 25 shell casings and footage captured rapid, automatic-style bursts that investigators say are consistent with a fully automatic weapon or a semiautomatic pistol fitted with an illegal conversion device; the shooter fled in a red SUV and no arrests have been reported.
  • City attorneys have filed an emergency motion to close Ford City’s main building because of faulty fire suppression, flooding, open wiring, poor lighting and large vacant spaces, and the mall is scheduled to shut down on June 22.
  • On Monday evening a separate argument in Uptown left a 63-year-old man dead and led to a foot chase where officers shot a suspect who raised a gun; the suspect is in critical condition, a firearm was recovered, and COPA and CPD investigative units are reviewing the case while involved officers are on routine administrative duty.
  • Local leaders warn that abandoned or unsecured large properties can become magnets for sideshows and violence, so officials and residents are watching whether Ford City is sold, secured or cleared before the planned closure and are monitoring the parallel COPA and CPD probes for accountability.
