SickKids Doctor Charged With Possessing and Accessing Child Sexual Abuse Material

Regulatory suspension followed the charges with police saying they have found no evidence so far linking the material to his clinical work

Overview

  • Dilan Dissanayake was arrested and charged Tuesday with one count of possessing and one count of accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
  • Toronto police’s Internet Child Exploitation unit opened the probe in January and executed search warrants in February that seized multiple devices, including a SickKids work computer.
  • SickKids placed Dissanayake on immediate leave and removed his online profile while the University of Toronto put him on administrative leave and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario suspended his registration.
  • Court documents show the alleged access occurred between Jan. 19 and Jan. 28 and Dissanayake was released on $20,000 bail with conditions that include bans on social media, online messaging and being alone with minors.
  • Police say the investigation is ongoing, they have asked the public for information, and authorities note the charges are unproven with no current evidence linking the alleged material to patient care which raises reputational and trust issues for the hospital.
