Shyam Steel Lays Foundation for ₹15,000-Crore Mejia Expansion

The move signals the new West Bengal government's push to revive industry through tougher law enforcement, easier land access, job-linked incentives.

Overview

  • Company and state officials laid the foundation stone at Mejia in Bankura on Friday for a reported ₹15,000-crore expansion that includes a ₹10,000-crore, 2 MTPA integrated steel plant.
  • The project will add a direct reduced iron unit, pellet and beneficiation plants, a steel melting shop and a high-speed rolling mill, raising Shyam Steel’s capacity from 1.5 MTPA to 3.5 MTPA.
  • Shyam Steel and the government say the expansion could generate more than 20,000 direct and indirect jobs and spur ancillary industries, transport and MSME growth around Bankura.
  • Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari used the launch to promise an investor-friendly climate with tougher action on syndicates, facilitated land purchase and incentives tied to jobs, and he contrasted this with the previous administration’s record.
  • The state BJP presented the Mejia ceremony as the first project moving into execution while noting a wider pipeline of proposed investments that remain at varied stages and will need approvals, land and financing before delivery.
