Short-Circuit Gas Explosion at Islamabad's NUML Injures Seven

Police confirm the blast stemmed from a gas leak ignited by an electrical fault after service was restored.

Overview

  • The explosion occurred around 4pm in a prayer room located near a clerk’s office on the NUML campus.
  • Gas service had been turned back on at about 3:30pm following a seasonal shutdown, allowing gas to accumulate before ignition.
  • Seven people were injured, including five students, a clerk and a junior assistant, with six reported out of danger by the hospital.
  • The clerk sustained severe burns estimated at 60–65 percent, while others suffered minor to moderate burn injuries.
  • Islamabad police units and the Counter-Terrorism Department examined the site and ruled out the use of explosives.
