Shopian Plunges to −5.9°C as Kashmir Endures Another Freezing Night

Forecasters see a mainly dry spell with brief isolated snowfall possible in higher reaches late Thursday, followed by another short window around December 8.

  • Srinagar fell to −4.4°C on Tuesday night, about 3.2°C below normal, as minimum temperatures across the Valley stayed well under seasonal averages.
  • Shopian was the coldest at −5.9°C, with Qazigund at −3.6°C, Kupwara at −4.1°C, Pahalgam at −4.6°C, and Gulmarg at −2.6°C.
  • A thick blanket of fog was reported across parts of the Valley, including Srinagar and areas near water bodies.
  • The MeT projects mainly dry weather over the next 24–48 hours, with a chance of brief light snow at isolated higher reaches late Thursday into early Friday, generally dry conditions on December 6–7, and another brief spell possible on December 8.
  • Earlier this week, light snowfall was recorded near Minimarg close to Zojila Pass, and overnight cloud cover temporarily lifted minimums by around two degrees even as daytime highs ran 1–4°C above normal in many areas.
