Shogakukan Pulls 'Jojin Kamen' and Halts Shipments After Civil Judgment

The move follows a Feb. 20 Sapporo court order requiring the credited author to pay ¥11 million in a civil case alleging sexual violence.

Overview

  • On Feb. 27, the Manga One editorial department suspended online distribution of the serialized manga '常人仮面' ('Jojin Kamen') and stopped shipments of its collected volumes.
  • Shogakukan apologized, stating the author should not have been hired and acknowledging failures in its selection and verification processes, with a direct apology to the victim.
  • The Sapporo District Court on Feb. 20 ordered the credited author, 一路一, to pay ¥11 million in damages in a suit brought by a former student alleging sexual violence.
  • The author is a former private high‑school teacher in Hokkaido who was arrested in 2020, received a summary fine, and saw his earlier serialization '堕天作戦' ended at that time.
  • Despite the 2020 case and a civil suit filed in July 2022, a new serialization began on Manga One in December 2022 under a different name, changing from 山本章一 to 一路一.
