Shirogumi Confirms One Set of Original Star Fox Puppets Was Destroyed

The studio cited air-driven decay from glued fur on natural rubber as the reason.

Overview

  • Time Extension reported Shirogumi said its Fox puppets, made with fur and feathers glued to natural rubber, decayed in air and were destroyed after production.
  • The coverage distinguishes at least two sets, with a puppeteering set for a Japanese in-store video separate from the figures used for box art.
  • Star Fox programmer Dylan Cuthbert said he last saw the box-art set about 15 years ago in a Nintendo storage room, leaving its status unknown.
  • The physical models depicted Fox, Falco, Peppy, and Slippy in early 1990s marketing across box covers, print ads, in-store promos, and a strategy guide.
  • A long-circulated photo of director Takashi Yamazaki operating a Fox puppet linked Shirogumi to the work, and the company’s new statement now settles that question.
