Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center Opens in East Flatbush, First New City-Run Center in 15 Years

Funded by a 2020 shift of $141 million from the NYPD capital plan, the East Flatbush hub offers low-cost access with free memberships for New Yorkers under 24.

Overview

  • Opening to the public on February 10 after a February 9 ribbon cutting by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the 74,000-square-foot facility sits at 3105 Farragut Place in Little Haiti, East Flatbush.
  • The center’s amenities include a six-lane competition pool with accessibility aids, a full gymnasium, a three-lane walking track, a teen center, classrooms, a teaching kitchen, and the Dr. Roy A. Hastick Sr. Media Lab.
  • City officials expect the facility to serve about 41,000 residents within a 15-minute walk or transit ride, with the mayor calling it the first of six new recreation centers planned citywide.
  • Designed by Studio Gang and targeting LEED Gold, the building features all-electric systems, energy recovery, mass-timber beams over the pool, rooftop terraces and gardens, and integrated artworks by Vanessa German.
  • Delivered via design-build by the NYC Department of Design and Construction with NYC Parks, the opening week includes one free day of access along with tours, demonstrations, and registration support.
