Shillong MP Presses Centre to Extend Inner Line Permit to Meghalaya

In a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, Ricky A.J. Syngkon sought expedited approval, noting that no final decision has followed the state's 2019 request.
He urged formation of a joint technical committee of the Home Ministry and the Meghalaya government to finalise modalities and report progress to Parliament and the State Assembly.
Syngkon cited a unanimous Assembly resolution from December 19, 2019 and argued for parity with Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur.
He said the permit system would address demographic change, land alienation and unregulated migration while bolstering security along the Bangladesh border and the boundary with Assam.
He noted that existing permit regimes use online systems that have not deterred tourism and proposed digital linkage to central databases in step with the new Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025.
