Shillong Hanuman Temple Vandalised After Thieves Torch CCTV and Steal Idols

Police are probing the break-in using video from neighboring homes.

Overview

  • Intruders broke a side entrance around 1 am at the Hanuman Mandir in Shillong’s Garikhana and ransacked the shrine.
  • The group set fire to CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the temple to erase evidence.
  • Thieves took small idols of Krishna, Radha and Hanuman, brass ritual items, four silver ornaments and cash, leaving the main idol untouched.
  • Footage from nearby homes recorded the suspects fleeing, and the files were given to Lumdiengjri police with an FIR by temple representative Ravi Sharma.
  • Police have launched a probe and are seeking the stolen items, as residents in Garikhana and Jhalupara question night patrols in the area.
