Sheriff’s Detectives Seize Quarter-Ton of Illegal Fireworks in San Leandro

The seizure precedes a new county ordinance that raises fines and expands liability to discourage dangerous fireworks use before the July Fourth holiday.

Overview

  • Detectives from the Eden Township Substation working with California State Parole found about 546 pounds of commercial-grade fireworks during a parole sweep and arrested the resident who was booked into Santa Rita Jail.
  • The Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordnance Disposal team took custody of the haul for safe destruction because the material was treated as hazardous.
  • The operation occurred days before a county ordinance set to take effect July 2 will allow administrative fines of $500 for a first violation, $750 for a second, and up to $1,000 for further violations.
