Overview
- Calgary police issued a shelter-in-place at Mount Royal University around 2:45 p.m. Monday after CCTV and witnesses reported someone entering campus with a large knife, then lifted it just over two hours later.
- Officers identified the person as a university kitchen employee carrying what appeared to be a chef’s knife for work and took one person into custody.
- Police said 30 to 40 officers responded from across the city and later stated there was no threat to public safety.
- Students described heavily armed officers on campus and said emails did not mention a weapon, with many reporting no alerts from the MRU Now safety app.
- The university said it sent several messages and warned the app can hibernate on some phones, and it plans to review its emergency communications as police consider possible mischief and weapons charges.
