Severe Storms Lash Central and Northern Argentina as Alerts Persist

Officials warn further storms are possible with weather alerts still in force across several provinces.

Overview

  • The national weather service kept yellow and orange warnings in place on Sunday for the center and north, with orange for central Santa Fe and northwest Entre Ríos and yellow in parts of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, Córdoba, Corrientes, Santiago del Estero, Chaco and Salta.
  • In Tucumán, authorities reported widespread flooding, evacuations, infrastructure damage and one electrocution death, with rain totals reaching more than 210 mm in Alpachiri and about 110 mm in the capital.
  • In the Buenos Aires metro area, short, intense downpours late Friday dropped 70–80 mm in about an hour with hail and winds near 100 km/h in Escobar, flooding streets, blowing off roofs, cutting power and prompting reports of leaks at Ezeiza International Airport.
  • Road officials in Catamarca closed Provincial Route 24 between Miraflores and Las Tejas due to the Río del Valle rising over the pavement and urged caution on Route 5’s Cuesta de los Ángeles because of fog and rockfall.
  • Forecasts call for a cooler turn in the AMBA, and emergency crews are clearing debris, restoring services and monitoring rivers as fast-moving storms that unload very large hourly rain volumes can overwhelm drains and canals in cities and rural areas.
