Overview
- A fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms moved through Maryland on Tuesday, bringing damaging straight-line winds, large hail, heavy rain and flash flooding that downed trees and power lines.
- The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touchdown near Trappe on Tuesday evening and has deployed survey teams to document damage and determine an official tornado rating.
- Storm reports and photos show wind gusts up to about 70 mph, palm-sized hail in some areas, flooded streets in waterfront neighborhoods such as Canton and Fells Point, and multiple instances of trees falling onto homes and vehicles.
- Baltimore Gas & Electric and other crews reported tens of thousands of outages at the storm peak overnight, with BGE saying roughly 34,000 customers lost service at one point and about 12,000 customers still without power as of 8 a.m. Wednesday while restoration continued.
- The storm system has moved offshore and calmer weather is expected, but local cleanup, on-the-ground damage surveys and utility restorations will continue and could change preliminary findings and outage counts.
