Seven-Year-Old From Ranchi Becomes Youngest To Swim Palk Strait in 9 Hours 50 Minutes

URF recognition highlights a months-long training campaign for a Class 3 student on one of the region’s toughest swims.

Overview

  • Ishank Singh, 7, completed the open-water route from Talaimannar in Sri Lanka to Dhanushkodi in India on April 30, covering about 29–30 km in 9 hours 50 minutes.
  • The Universal Records Forum certified him as the “Youngest and Fastest Palk Strait Swimmer,” with his time presented as bettering the 2019 benchmark set at age 10 by Jay Jaswanth.
  • His family and coaches say he trained four to five hours daily at Ranchi’s Dhurwa Dam for months under Aman Kumar Jaiswal and Bajrang Kumar, with additional sea practice in Rameswaram in March.
  • Reports describe strong currents and rough seas, with the start pushed to 4 am due to weather, and the family says the Sri Lankan Navy and later the Indian Coast Guard escorted parts of the swim.
  • Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren praised the achievement, while his school celebrated the feat as the boy pursues open-water challenges since many national swim events bar under‑11 entrants.
