Seven Killed in Head-On Crash on Mexico’s Siglo XXI

Investigators are carrying out forensic work on the busy route under alternating traffic control.

  • The fatal head-on between two family pickups occurred Saturday morning near km 172 on the UruapanNueva Italia stretch, and responders confirmed seven people died at the scene.
  • A separate head-on at km 149 in the area known as the socavón later left two people seriously injured and transported to hospital as the National Guard directed traffic with a partial lane closure.
  • State prosecutors, forensic teams and firefighters are conducting on-site peritaje and body recovery to determine causes and responsibilities, and officials have not yet released findings.
  • On Friday, a trailer left the roadway and caught fire on the Autopista de Occidente near km 374, killing the driver and bringing a temporary full closure until crews cleared the scene.
