Services Set for Fallen Chicago Firefighter Michael Altman as Police Detain Man for Questioning in Rogers Park Blaze

Investigators are still determining the fire’s cause, with autopsy results pending and no charges filed after a man sought for questioning was arrested on an unrelated warrant.

Overview

  • Visitation is scheduled for March 26 from 3–8 p.m. at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel, with a funeral there March 27 at 10 a.m.
  • Altman, 32, died Tuesday after falling through a collapsed first floor into a burning basement during a 2-11 alarm fire at 1757 W. North Shore Ave.
  • Around 100 firefighters responded to Monday’s blaze, which was struck out about 1:15 p.m., and the Chicago Police arson unit is investigating.
  • Police say a person identified for questioning was taken into custody at a hospital on an outstanding warrant, and an internal leak of the bulletin is under review.
  • CFD reports seven residents were displaced with no other injuries, and community fundraisers have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Altman’s family, including his young child and pregnant wife.
