Overview
- National monitoring agencies reported several magnitude 4.0–4.9 earthquakes in recent days across Peru and Mexico, with real-time updates posted by the IGP and SSN.
- The strongest recent event was a magnitude 4.9 off Peru’s Ica coast, located 72 km west of San Juan de Marcona at 34 km depth, which residents felt at intensity III–IV.
- Mexico logged a magnitude 4.1 near Pinotepa Nacional in Oaxaca and a 4.2 south of San Felipe in Baja California, followed by a 4.0 near San Pedro Pochutla, with no widespread damage reported.
- Mexico’s seismic alert system, known as SASMEX, did not sound because it triggers only when early estimates point to strong shaking near population centers, so moderate or distant quakes stay below its thresholds.
- IGP chief Hernando Tavera and other experts note that exact timing of earthquakes cannot be predicted, so safety depends on building to technical standards, practicing drills, keeping an emergency kit, and relying on official channels like IGP, SSN, and USGS.
