Overview
- A mortar strike hit a UNIFIL position near Marjayoun on the night of June 3–4 and critically wounded Senior Sergeant Milovan Jovanovic of Serbia, who later died after being flown to a hospital in Beirut.
- Two other peacekeepers, reported from Spain and El Salvador, were wounded and are receiving treatment at a UNIFIL medical facility in south Lebanon.
- The Israel Defence Forces said trajectory analysis points to mortar launches by Hezbollah landing inside the UN position, but UNIFIL has not yet confirmed the origin and its investigation is ongoing.
- UN Secretary‑General António Guterres and several countries including India have condemned the attack, urged prompt investigations, and warned that deliberate hits on peacekeepers may amount to war crimes.
- The death raises fresh questions about UNIFIL’s ability to protect troops and could influence decisions over the force’s mandate as exchanges of fire have increased along the Blue Line since early March.
