Overview
- Seismologists recorded a series of moderate earthquakes off the Chiapas coast between July 31 and August 2 with magnitudes clustering about 4.1 to 4.7 and epicenters located well offshore.
- The Servicio Sismológico Nacional located multiple events at shallow focal depths (roughly 7–15 km), which increases local shaking but reduced impact because most epicenters were in the Pacific Ocean.
- State and national Protección Civil teams carried out inspections after the quakes and have reported no structural damage or injuries while keeping surveillance active.
- Peru’s Instituto Geofísico reported smaller, unrelated quakes in Cusco and Ica (magnitudes about 3.5–3.8) that also caused no damage and were monitored by local authorities.
- Authorities urged residents to follow official channels, keep basic emergency supplies and check buildings for visible cracks because the repeating events can produce aftershocks that warrant continued vigilance.
