SEP Confirms Local Carnival School Breaks, Reaffirms National Calendar

Education officials say the localized suspensions do not alter the national school calendar.

Overview

  • Classes are suspended Monday–Tuesday, Feb. 16–17, in select areas for Carnaval, creating a four‑day break from Feb. 14–17 in those localities.
  • The pause applies across all of Yucatán and 13 municipalities in Campeche, plus Veracruz’s Alvarado, Veracruz, Boca del Río, Medellín and Xalapa, and only Mazatlán in Sinaloa.
  • The SEP calendar holds a nationwide no‑class day for basic education on Friday, Feb. 27, for a Consejo Técnico Escolar session, and a four‑day break from March 13–16.
  • Semana Santa dates remain unchanged: vacation runs March 30 to April 10 for preschool, primary and secondary students, with classes resuming April 13.
  • Separately from Carnaval, Jalisco continues targeted 14‑day closures in roughly 15 schools to contain measles cases, according to the state health authority.
