SEP and School Communities Agree to Move Two Schools Next to Dos Bocas Refinery

Community approval of a design and a June 5 deadline will trigger six months of construction after the school board signs off.

Overview

  • The Secretary of Education, Mario Delgado, met with parents and teachers and the community approved an architectural proposal to relocate Jardín de Niños Agustín Melgar and Primaria Abias Domínguez Alejandro.
  • The assembly set a firm deadline for the anteproyecto to be delivered by June 5 and agreed that construction will take six months after the community gives its consent.
  • Both new schools will be built on municipal land donated for the project, must include basic services, match the current number of classrooms and keep the same teaching and administrative staff.
  • A monitoring commission made up of parents, education authorities and Pemex representatives will oversee the works and report on transparency while classes continue at the current sites.
  • Families pushed for the move after recent safety incidents reported at the Dos Bocas refinery, and environmental groups say the schools’ prior location may have violated rules that bar siting schools near hazardous industrial facilities.
