Overview
- A 35-year-old senior resident anaesthesiologist, Dr Simarpreet Singh Anand, was found unconscious inside Duty Room No. 109 at Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital after a night shift that began on July 4 and was declared dead on arrival the morning of July 5.
- Colleagues forced the locked duty-room door open at about 9 am when he did not respond after duty and police found a cannula in his left hand that a technician said was inserted around 10 pm at the doctor’s request.
- Investigators recovered a three-page handwritten note and a personal diary as well as a syringe, empty medicine vials and a black bag from the room; the note reportedly says the doctor took the step himself and refers to a relationship with fellow senior resident Dr Akanksha Chaudhary.
- The District Crime Team and the Forensic Science Laboratory from Rohini have examined the scene and police have sent the body for a medical-board post-mortem while forensic tests are under way to determine whether anaesthetic drugs were involved.
- The case has raised questions about workplace access to potent drugs and the mental-health toll of social pressures such as caste-based family opposition, and police say they are verifying the claims in the recovered documents as part of an active investigation.
