Senate Sets March 18 Session to Fast-Track Mahiques Extension and Military Promotions

The ruling bloc seeks swift admission of nominations under time pressure from judicial age limits.

Overview

  • After a Labor Parlamentaria meeting led by provisional president Bartolomé Abdala, blocs agreed to convene on March 18 to admit a batch of executive pliegos.
  • The agenda includes the judicial file to extend Judge Carlos Mahiques’s tenure by five years in the Federal Chamber of Criminal Cassation as he approaches the constitutional retirement age of 75 in November.
  • Roughly 150 promotions across the Air Force, Army and Navy, plus additional regulatory appointments, will enter for Senate consideration.
  • Senator Juan Carlos Pagotto now presides over the Senate Commission of Acuerdos and will organize public hearings required to process the nominations.
  • The schedule follows an aborted attempt to meet this week due to lack of quorum, and it coincides with a leadership change placing Agustín Monteverde at the helm of the Budget and Finance Commission in place of Ezequiel Atauche.
