Senamhi Warns of Coastal Heat Through Jan. 28, With Highs Up to 37°C

North winds combined with reduced cloud cover are driving a spike in temperatures that is pushing UV radiation to extreme levels.

Overview

  • Updated guidance projects maximums from Jan. 26–28 of 31–37 °C in the north, 27–35/34/33 °C in the central coast, 27–33 °C in the south, and about 27–32 °C in metropolitan Lima, with a slight easing by the 28th.
  • Priority areas include Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque and La Libertad in the north, Áncash, Lima and Ica in the central coast, and Arequipa, Tacna and Moquegua in the south.
  • In Lima, real-time monitoring on Jan. 26 showed districts such as Carabayllo, San Juan de Lurigancho, Ate and La Molina near 29 °C, with the most intense heat and UV between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Senamhi advises hats with wide brims, umbrellas and sunglasses, and urges people to avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak radiation hours.
  • For context, Lima logged its hottest day of the summer on Jan. 23, reaching 31.9 °C at the Von Humboldt station, as an earlier coastal notice covered Jan. 23–25 with northern highs forecast up to 37 °C.
