Semi-Truck Teeters Beside Power Pole in San Jose, Thousands Lose Power

Emergency crews shut roads, worked with PG&E to cut power, and stabilized the truck to prevent a power-pole strike.

Overview

  • A semi-truck with a damaged rear axle was judged at risk of rolling over near South First Street and East Alma Avenue in San Jose.
  • San Jose firefighters closed nearby roads and established a unified command with the police, PG&E and the city’s Department of Transportation to secure the scene.
  • PG&E carried out a precautionary shutdown expected to affect about 7,000 to 8,000 customers for at least three hours to avoid electrical hazards if the truck hit the pole.
  • Road closures led to evacuations and detours and disrupted access to nearby services, including the nearby community service building that was evacuated as a precaution.
  • Officials continue stabilization efforts and have not yet determined how the axle was damaged or whether the truck was involved in a crash, leaving the cause and liability under investigation.
