Semi Crosses Median on I-10 in Thousand Palms, Killing Cement-Truck Driver

CHP is investigating why the eastbound big rig veered into oncoming lanes.

Overview

  • The crash on Interstate 10 west of Washington Street, reported around 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, left the cement-truck driver dead, authorities said.
  • Investigators say the eastbound semi veered left for unknown reasons, struck several vehicles, crossed the median and guardrail, and hit a cement truck and a Jeep in the westbound lanes.
  • Riverside County Fire Department crews treated six people at the scene, and the semi driver was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center with injuries.
  • One lane in each direction reopened by late morning as crews cleared debris and investigators worked the scene, and lanes later reopened by Tuesday night, according to local reports.
  • CHP has not determined a cause and is reviewing factors that can include mechanical issues, driver condition, and road conditions in a standard commercial-vehicle crash probe.
