Sega Created Android Sonic So the Mascot Could Appear Armed in Fortnite

Sega approved an in-universe android version to keep Sonic’s family-friendly identity intact while letting Epic integrate the character into Fortnite’s shooter systems.

Overview

  • Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka said Sept. 3 that Sega authorized an 'Android Sonic' so the character could hold guns in Fortnite without changing the canonical Sonic.
  • Android Sonic is live as the first Battle Pass skin for Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 and serves as the season’s face in Epic’s video game–themed update.
  • Sega and Epic changed Sonic’s in-game body and behavior to match Fortnite rules, giving the skin taller proportions for a standard hitbox, reduced top speed, and surface swimming.
  • Other franchise characters in the season, including Shadow and Knuckles, are presented as android variants and Dr. Eggman appears as an in‑game NPC boss.
  • The android solution reflects a long negotiation that began years ago and shows how licensors balance brand protection with technical and competitive constraints in crossovers.
