Overview
- The shooting, which unfolded Tuesday around 10:30 p.m. in a shopping center lot on the 5800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, left a woman wounded.
- Police say two cars carrying three women pulled in and a fight broke out, then a fourth woman joined and kicked one of the fighters while she was on the ground.
- The guard told officers he broke up the fight, fell as the fourth woman swung at him, returned to his vehicle, and fired after she approached saying she had something for him and dug in her purse.
- The woman, believed to be homeless and in her 40s, was shot in the hand and abdomen and taken to a Houston hospital, and her condition was not known.
- HPD and the Harris County district attorney's office are gathering surveillance video and witness accounts to assess whether the guard's use of force was justified.
